It's like Malware! Veryvito 23 October This is yet another once-great app that I used to pay to upgrade regularly that has fallen prey to the subscription model.

Sorry to have to uninstall it at the end of this month, but this software model has got to stop. Sparrowhawk 08 October So not free, but so close as to make no real difference. Yes others are completely free, but from experience they also consume more system resources and are a PITA to remove. Here we have a developer who cares about the Mac, who puts real effort into getting a quality program out, and yes, who asks to be paid for his work. Not that I'm a fan of subscriptions, but in this case it's almost a no-brainer. The only other two subs I maintain are for JetBrains products and Office In each case for me, the constant updates and improvements, and decent licensing terms have been enough to persuade me to opt in. The UI could do with a little more polish, it's true. Those drive icons are a little too big and don't fit in well with the look and feel of a modern Mac, but to be honest, I don't spend my life inside the GUI of my AV software, so I don't really care too much about that.

One thing to note: the scanning speeds, and the ramp up time before a scan actually begins are both hugely improved over v2.Ī very welcome improvement indeed.Mark Allan Trial version.
#CLAMXAV FOR MAC REVIEW WINDOWS#
If you own a Mac, you're far less likely to have a virus scanner than a Windows user. For many years, Mac users have relied on the fact that Macs just weren't that widespread, and that meant most malicious attacks were targeted at Windows. Times are changing, and ClamXav is one of many antivirus programs aimed specifically at Mac users. It's free, and it's built around ClamAV, so it has the support of a well established open source community.ĬlamXav is designed to be lightweight and non-intrusive. Users can quickly quarantine or trash a file with a click, and the Sentry service acts as a constant disk monitor without dragging performance down. All in all, ClamXav is ideal for Mac users who want simple protection and minimum fuss. No doubt there are fancier aniti-viral products on the market that offer more features, but ClamXAV has served me very well, and so far plays nicely with all of my other applications, so I’m not even aware of it as it sits quietly in the background keeping my Mac out of harms way.ĭate of experience: NovemShow reviews in all languages. While viruses aren't yet a pressing problem for Mac users, one malicious attack could wipe your data for good. Overall this is a trusted product that is offered for a very modest price, so I’m more than happy to support the developers as they continue to improve the functionality of this software. Scans on the SSD of my MacBook Air are slower than I would like, but the software runs in the background and can be set to “ignore” my music folder, which takes up the bulk of my drive. The software operates seamlessly in the background and while it has a simple interface, it allows for a level of customization that I find quite useful. protection as essential, and since I’ve used ClamXAV have never had a successful attack of any kind on any of my Macs. I used ClamXAV for a long time while it was offered as freeware, and really didn’t have any qualms when it switched to an annual subscription. In addition, I've never seen any privacy issues or sharing of my personal information connected to this service.

The price is extremely reasonable compared to other options, from what I have seen. With common sense online usage (don't click on the rare pop-up that wants to hold your machine hostage, just shut down), you will never have a problem. The software has caught and isolated anything I've come in contact with. I've had ZERO problems with intrusions while using this product. If you've got a Mac, you cannot lose with this. Understanding that it is costly and time consuming to develop and maintain software and to keep up with the latest threats, I had no qualms about paying a nominal fee once there was a charge for the service several years later. Originally, it was freeware, so I tried it on the advice of a friend because I felt I had nothing to lose. Clam XAV has been protecting my Mac for many years now.I believe since about 2009 or 2010.
